How to arrange care at home in the North West

Arranging care feels daunting the first time, but it breaks down into five manageable steps. Here's the practical path from "we need some help" to the first visit.

Step 1: Name what's actually needed

Before you call anyone, spend ten minutes listing where help would genuinely change the day. Is it mornings (washing, dressing, breakfast)? Medication? Meals? Company? Nights? Don't worry about care jargon, "Mum struggles to get going in the morning and forgets her tablets" is exactly the kind of information a good provider needs.

Step 2: Consider a needs assessment

Everyone is entitled to a free care needs assessment from their local council's adult social care team, in Preston that's Lancashire County Council. It can unlock funded support if you qualify, and it's useful information even if you'll be self-funding. You don't have to wait for it to arrange private care, and many families run both in parallel.

Step 3: Shortlist regulated providers

Check three things about any provider you consider: their CQC registration and rating (inspection reports are public at cqc.org.uk), how they vet and train care staff (DBS checks, references, induction, supervision), and whether they genuinely serve your area. Flexecare is based in Ribbleton, Preston, CQC-rated Good, and covers communities across the North West.

Step 4: Book a free assessment

Good providers assess before they quote. A senior member of the care team visits at home, listens to routines and preferences, checks practicalities like keys and equipment, and writes a personalised care plan. It should be free and carry no obligation, and you should come away feeling listened to, not sold to. Book a Flexecare assessment here.

Step 5: Start small and review

Care doesn't have to begin with a big package. Many families start with a few visits a week and grow the support as trust builds. Whatever you start with, make sure the provider reviews the plan regularly, needs change, and the package should change with them. It can also step down: short-term recovery care that ends when strength returns is a normal, healthy outcome.

A note on urgency

If care is needed quickly, a hospital discharge, a family carer suddenly unavailable, say so upfront. Providers can often move fast when they know the clock matters: Flexecare regularly arranges discharge support within days.
